Biennale Danza is the International Festival of Contemporary Dance of La Biennale di Venezia, one of the most prestigious contemporary dance festivals in the world. Founded in 1999 as part of La Biennale, the festival has become a leading platform for world premieres, experimental choreography, and site-specific performances. The 20th International Festival in 2026 was directed by Sir Wayne McGregor, now in his sixth year as Director, building on the founding vision and themes such as future myths, sustainability, and the generative power of art under titles like Myth Makers and Time Does Not Exist.
You can expect a programme that includes world premieres, Golden Lion and Silver Lion awards, Biennale College Danza showcases, video installations from La Biennale Historical Archive, talks, films, and site-specific performances at Arsenale venues. The festival combines large scale productions with intimate installations, documentary screenings, and conversations with artistic directors who have led the festival since 2003 including Frédéric Flamand, Karole Armitage, Virgilio Sieni, Marie Chouinard and Wayne McGregor.
The event brings together leading international companies, choreographers and dancers for an intensive programme that explores contemporary movement, technology, and cross-disciplinary practice.
