What to expect

The Granfondo Dobbiaco-Cortina is one of the most traditional and popular cross-country ski races in Italy and has been held since 1977. Second only to the Marcialonga among Italy’s granfondos, it has earned worldwide recognition, having hosted a stage of the Tour de Ski in 2010 and being part of the renowned international Ski Classics circuit as a Challengers event. The magic of this event lies in its enchanting routes capable of immersing lovers of narrow skis in the marvellous setting of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites of Alta Pusteria and the Ampezzo peaks.

You can expect two days of sport and spectacle along a route that connects the Tre Cime di Lavaredo with Cortina d’Ampezzo. The event is designed for skiers of all levels, from elite athletes competing in the Ski Classics Challengers series to enthusiastic amateurs who want to experience the historic railway track from Dobbiaco to Cortina that was closed in the early 1960s and transformed into a legendary ski trail. The atmosphere combines competitive intensity with Dolomite hospitality, with well-groomed tracks, professional organization, and breathtaking views of Lake Dobbiaco, Lake Landro, the War Cemetery, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo View Point.

The weekend offers both classic technique and skating technique races, allowing participants to choose their preferred style or to take on both challenges. The organization provides comprehensive services including timing, medical assistance, refreshments, and a vibrant expo area that celebrates cross-country culture.

FAQ

What is the difference between classic and skating technique races?

Classic technique requires skis to remain in parallel tracks with diagonal stride and no skating steps, while skating technique allows freestyle movements similar to ice skating with greater speed and agility. The Granfondo offers 42 km classic on Saturday and 35 km skating on Sunday, each with its own ranking and technique rules monitored on course. Participants can choose one technique or enter both days for a combined experience.

What does the course look like and where are the highlights?

Both routes start at the former military airport in Dobbiaco, head briefly toward San Candido, loop through Dobbiaco village, and continue past Lake Dobbiaco, War Cemetery, Lake Landro, Tre Cime View Point, Val Fonda, Carbonin and up to Cimabanche Pass at over 1500 meters before returning to Nordic Arena. The old railway track from Dobbiaco to Cortina closed in the 1960s forms the backbone of the trail, offering wide and well-groomed tracks with panoramic Dolomite views.

How do I register and what is included in the entry fee?

Registration is via the official website and ENDU platform, with early bird, standard and late phases plus add-ons like medal engraving added during online registration. Entry includes bib with chip, insurance, medical assistance, on-course refreshments, final refreshment bag, timing and results, diploma, finisher medal, changing rooms, toilets and bag storage. Waxing cabins, premium parking and photo packages are available as optional extras.

How do I get to Dobbiaco and where should I stay?

Dobbiaco is in Alta Pusteria, reachable by train via Fortezza and Puster Valley line, by car via Autostrada A22 exit Bressanone then SS49, and by shuttle from Venice, Treviso, Innsbruck and Verona airports. Recommended stays are Dobbiaco village for proximity to Nordic Arena and start, San Candido for nearby access, and Cortina d'Ampezzo for a resort experience with transport to start. Local tourist offices offer runner-friendly packages with early breakfast and ski storage.

Is the event suitable for beginners and what equipment is needed?

The event welcomes all levels, from elite Ski Classics Challengers teams to recreational skiers, with age group categories and shorter distances in special editions such as 26 km when conditions require. Classic races need classic skis, boots and poles with classic technique compliance, while skating races need freestyle equipment. Fluor wax restrictions apply per international rules, and organization provides waxing areas and guidance on approved products.
