Biennale Teatro is the International Theatre Festival of La Biennale di Venezia, inaugurated in 1934 and recognized as one of the most important contemporary theatre festivals in Europe. The 54th International Theatre Festival in 2026 titled Alter Native was directed by Willem Dafoe, who began his artistic journey at 19 with Theatre X from 1975 to 1977, one of the first experimental groups in the US. The programme featured performances and events with the most important figures on the contemporary theatre scene, in addition to productions created as part of Biennale College Teatro, the training project dedicated to young artists.
You can expect over 200 artists for 55 events, including 11 productions and co-productions, 10 world premieres, 2 European and 4 Italian premieres, as seen in recent edition with 610 applications submitted for Biennale College Teatro. The festival explores native rituals and traditions while developing them in often startlingly innovative ways, with practitioners from Italy and many parts of world including Africa, Japan, New Zealand, Indonesia, Greece and India, bent on exploring native rituals.
The festival builds on themes such as Theatre is Body – Body is Poetry, an homage to Ronconi’s legendary 1975 Biennale, and Alter Native, which examines how theatre can return to origins while creating alternative futures.
