What to expect
Trieste Spring Run is the rebirth of a historic Adriatic running festival that locals still call Bavisela, a name that has meant spring running in Trieste since the first edition in 1994. What began as a small combination of footrace and rowing regatta in the seaside district of Barcola has grown into one of the most attended road events in northeastern Italy, now celebrating its third decade with the full return of the marathon distance. Expect a weekend where the city’s waterfront becomes a continuous ribbon of runners, where the wind off the Gulf of Trieste carries the sound of cheering from Miramare Castle to Piazza Unità d’Italia, and where elite athletes and families share the same finish line.
The core promise of the event is scenery and community in equal measure. All competitive distances are point to point or out and back along the famous Strada Costiera, the coastal road carved into limestone cliffs between Trieste and Sistiana. This road offers panoramic views of the Adriatic, the white stone of Duino Castle, and on clear days the Istrian coast. The finish is always in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in Europe open to the sea, surrounded by Habsburg palaces, municipal buildings and coffee houses. For many runners, finishing under the windows of the Town Hall with the sea behind them is the most memorable finish line in Italy.
Organized by ASD Trieste Atletica APS and APD Miramar with FIDAL approval, the weekend includes multiple formats. The flagship is the Trieste 42K, the only full marathon in Friuli Venezia Giulia, reintroduced after a nine year absence. Alongside it runs the Trieste 21K half marathon, one of the most exciting races in the national road calendar, the Bavisela Family Run non competitive run from Miramare Castle to the city center, and Trieste Spring Young dedicated to primary school children. There is also a roller edition for inline skaters on the same coastal course. Services are professional despite the festival atmosphere, with chip timing, medical assistance, bag transport, refreshment stations, and extensive security apparatus that the region supports to keep the event at one of the lowest entry prices on the market.

Stadium & sports venue
Trieste Spring Run does not use a traditional stadium, because the city itself is the venue. The sporting infrastructure is built around two iconic open air landmarks linked by the coastal road.
Piazza Unità d’Italia is the beating heart. Measuring over 12,000 square meters and opening directly onto the sea via Molo Audace, it serves as start area for the full marathon, finish area for every distance, awards stage, Expo Village, bag collection, medical tent, and Pasta Party. The square is flanked by Palazzo del Municipio, Palazzo Lloyd Triestino and historic cafes, creating natural grandstands for spectators. The finish arch is positioned to face the sea, so photographers capture runners with the Adriatic and the lighthouse in background.
Strada Costiera and Miramare Castle form the racing corridor. The coastal road, also known as Costiera road, is closed to traffic for the event, creating a safe, smooth, fast corridor with gentle undulation. The stretch between Sistiana Bay and Miramare is considered one of the most beautiful running roads in Europe, with views of white cliffs, pine woods and Miramare Castle itself. Miramare Castle, built between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, is the start for the Family Run and a key passage point for marathon and half marathon. Its park and forecourt are used for warm up and family gathering.
Duino / Sistiana Area is the turnaround and secondary start zone. For the full marathon, the turnaround point is located near Sistiana, while the half marathon starts in Sistiana or Duino and heads directly to Trieste along the coast. This area provides parking, shuttle boarding points and a scenic pre race atmosphere.
The Expo Village is set up directly in Piazza Unità, with additional logistics offices in Porto Vecchio redevelopment area, ensuring everything is walkable within the city center.
Full fixture or event schedule
The event is spread across a long weekend to separate competitive logistics from school and family activities, while keeping all finishes in the same square.
The program opens with Trieste Spring Young, a festival dedicated to the youngest runners from Trieste’s primary schools. This takes place in Piazza Unità d’Italia two days before the main races, with short distances, games and educational activities about sport and healthy lifestyle. It is non competitive and focused on participation.
The following day is dedicated to final preparations. The Expo Village in Piazza Unità opens for bib and race pack collection, sponsor stands, and technical briefings. Registration is not possible on race day, so this is the last window for in person services. The city also hosts shake out runs along the waterfront from Miramare to Barcola.
On main race morning, operations start very early. Shuttles transport half marathon runners from Trieste city center to Sistiana and Duino. Marathon runners gather in Piazza Unità for corral access and bag drop. The Family Run participants assemble at Miramare Castle. The first competitive start is the Trieste 42K from Piazza Unità, heading out toward Strada Costiera toward Sistiana with turnaround and return along same route. Shortly after, the Trieste 21K starts from Sistiana area toward Trieste, delivering a net downhill fast profile with unforgettable coastal views. The Family Run then starts from Miramare Castle toward Piazza Unità, covering approximately 7 to 8 kilometers depending on year.
Late morning sees continuous finishing in Piazza Unità, with all distances converging. The roller edition, Trieste Spring Roller, often starts mid morning on same course. Awards ceremonies take place around midday in Piazza Unità. The afternoon is dedicated to recovery, Pasta Party, photo services, and free movement of participants back to parking areas and shuttle points. Road reopening is phased, with coastal road remaining closed until last runners clear.
Teams, athletes & participants
The event attracts a remarkably diverse field, reflecting its border location and historic international appeal.
- Marathon Elite and Mass: Roughly 700 athletes tackled the revived full marathon in its return edition, coming from over 30 countries. The field includes FIDAL club athletes, RUNCARD holders with competitive medical certificate, World Athletics affiliated foreign athletes, and a dedicated Tourist Run category for foreign athletes without certificate who wish to run without official ranking. Kenya’s Benjamin Kirprop Selem won the comeback edition in 2:32:21, illustrating the mix of international and largely amateur field that defines its re entry onto global calendar.
- Half Marathon Competitive: The Trieste 21K draws around 2,500 to 3,000 runners, making it the largest competitive race of the weekend. It is known for being smooth and fast, starting in Sistiana and following the breathtaking coastline before heading into the city. Participants include strong regional clubs, Austrian runners, Slovenian and German contingents, plus travelers from Australia, Japan, Canada, United States and Singapore.
- Family Run Community: The largest contingent, about 5,500 to 7,000 strong in recent editions, takes part in the non competitive Bavisela Family Run from Miramare Castle to city center. No medical certificate required, open to all ages and abilities, including families with children, elderly couples and corporate teams. This is the true civic celebration.
- Young and Roller: Trieste Spring Young involves primary school children racing in Piazza Unità, while Roller attracts inline skaters who race the same coastal road.
- Team Representation: Over 10,000 total participants across all races and side events in anniversary edition from 67 countries, marking 30 percent increase over previous year, with more than 400 from Austria, about 100 from Slovenia and 80 from Germany.
- Pacer and Support Teams: Official pacers for marathon and half marathon, plus volunteer teams from Miramare and Trieste Atletica, medical motorcycles, and first aid points along course.
Tournament format & competition structure
Trieste Spring Run is structured as a multi distance road running festival under FIDAL and World Athletics rules, not a knockout tournament, but with clear competitive hierarchy.
- Trieste 42K Marathon Format: Single stage road race of 42.195 km, out and back from Piazza Unità d’Italia along Strada Costiera toward Sistiana with turnaround near Sistiana Bay and return along same route. - Trieste 21K Half Marathon Format: Single stage road race of 21.097 km, point to point from Sistiana or Duino area to Piazza Unità d’Italia. Predominantly downhill and fast, ideal for personal bests, certified and chip timed. Start in Sistiana delivers coastal panorama for first half, then urban entry through Barcola and historic center.
- Family Run Format: Non competitive run and walk, approximately 7 to 8 km, starting at Miramare Castle forecourt and finishing in Piazza Unità. Timed for fun but no official ranking, no medical certificate required.
- Young Race Format: Short non competitive distances inside Piazza Unità and waterfront, dedicated to children, with focus on participation and education.
- Roller Format: Competitive inline skating race on same coastal road, with separate safety rules and helmet mandatory.
- Ranking and Awards: Overall male and female winners by gun time, followed by age category awards. RUNCARD and Tourist Run participants excluded from prize money. First aid and refreshment stations placed according to regulations, with time limits enforced for road reopening.
