Historical Foundation: The Salone Internazionale del Restauro was born in Ferrara over three decades ago with the objective of giving visibility to a sector that represents one of the highest expressions of Made in Italy excellence. Since its early editions, the event has enjoyed the patronage of the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and leading institutions such as FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano, CNR, ENEA and the University of Ferrara.
Evolution of a Benchmark: What began as a national showcase for restoration companies has evolved into an international hub recognized worldwide. The creation of the Technical-Scientific Committee coordinated by the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara has elevated the scientific content, with the participation of emeritus professors, former directors of the Central Institute for Restoration and presidents of national scientific committees. This governance has ensured that innovative ideas and contents dedicated to Italian restoration are presented with absolute rigor.
Restauro Made in Italy Project: Since 2019, the fair has become the heart of the PROJECT RESTAURO MADE IN ITALY, born thanks to the partnership with Assorestauro – Italian Association for Architectural, Artistic and Urban Restoration and the contribution and support of ITA Agency – Italian Trade Agency. This initiative recognizes the restoration sector as an excellence of Made in Italy and promotes and enhances the brand worldwide through incoming delegations of foreign operators and outgoing actions toward strategic countries.
Opening Ritual: Each edition traditionally opens with an institutional ceremony attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Comune di Ferrara, BolognaFiere Group and international delegations. The ceremony includes the presentation of the restoration site of the year and the conferment of awards to companies distinguished for technological innovation.
Scientific Community Gathering: A long-standing custom is the gathering of the entire Italian restoration community under one roof. Artisans, restorers, architects, engineers, geologists, chemists, archaeologists and art historians meet to discuss case studies, share diagnostic results and debate restoration charters. This interdisciplinary exchange is considered a ritual that renews the professional identity of the sector.
Live Restoration Workshops: A hallmark tradition is the organization of live restoration laboratories where visitors can observe restorers at work on paintings, frescoes, stone materials, mosaics and wooden artifacts. These demonstrations preserve the transmission of traditional craftsmanship and allow younger generations to approach ancient techniques.
Restoration Week Connection: The fair is traditionally linked to Restoration Week, an extraordinary itinerant tour where international delegates visit the main restoration sites of Italy. Ferrara serves as the central hub of this tour, allowing deepening and better knowledge of Italian restoration through direct contact with construction sites and monuments.
Visitors can expect three intense and concrete days of exhibition, conferences, exhibitions and events. The pavilions host companies and institutions that make up the excellence of the Italian and international cultural heritage scene. Expect to find diagnostic technologies such as XRF scanners for art analysis, laser cleaning systems, innovative consolidants, sustainable materials for historic buildings, 3D surveying and digital documentation tools, museum lighting and climate control solutions.
The programme includes technical workshops on seismic improvement of historic buildings, green building protocols for cultural heritage, such as the GBC Historic Building certification, and innovative projects for the redevelopment of historic hospitals into multifunctional cultural spaces. Large-scale exhibitions present completed restoration projects, including results of diagnostic investigations carried out during major conservation projects such as the Adoration of the Magi by Leonardo.
Expect a highly international atmosphere. In recent editions, approximately 70 foreign delegates from 18 countries including Albania, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Cuba, Ethiopia, France, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Mexico, Kosovo, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine, USA and Uzbekistan have participated in dedicated B2B sessions. The event serves as a crucial appointment for exchange and growth within a sector essential to both Italian and international economic and cultural development.

The surrounding exhibition district features local specialties that reflect the cultural heritage celebrated inside the pavilions.
Tasting Areas: During exhibition hours, catering points offer traditional Ferrarese specialties such as cappellacci di zucca, pasticcio di maccheroni, salama da sugo and tenerina chocolate cake. These products represent the intangible cultural heritage that the restoration fair also aims to protect through the enhancement of local identity.
Sustainable Food Culture: Many exhibitors and conferences draw parallels between food heritage and built heritage, discussing how traditional food production techniques require the same conservation approach as architectural heritage. Local consortia often participate with educational tastings that link landscape, agriculture and historic preservation.

It is intended for restoration companies, architects, engineers, conservators, public administrations, superintendencies, museums, universities, research centers, students of conservation and all professionals involved in the protection and enhancement of tangible cultural heritage.
This is not a general building fair but the only fair in Italy and one of the few in the world focused entirely on restoration as an economic sector. It integrates economics, conservation, technologies and valorization, with a strong scientific component led by a technical-scientific committee. The presence of international delegations, B2B meetings organized with ITA Agency and over 150 specialized conferences make it a unique platform for both business and scientific exchange.
Yes, B2B meetings require prior registration on the official digital platform where profiles of approximately 70 foreign delegates from 18 countries are published. Once registered, you can request and confirm 20-minute appointments that take place in the International Area Hall 4. The service is free for exhibitors and registered professional visitors but slots are limited and early booking is recommended.
Most conferences, round tables and technical workshops are included in the professional admission ticket and are accessible until seats are filled. Some specialized masterclasses and technical visits to external restoration sites require separate registration at the information desk or at exhibitor stands. The full program is available on the official website and via the official app which provides schedule updates.
International visitors benefit from dedicated assistance provided by Ferrara Expo and ITA Agency, including welcome desks, translation support for B2B meetings, shuttle services from Ferrara railway station and major hotels, assistance with hotel booking and information on transfers from Bologna Airport. The exhibition centre itself offers business services, free Wi-Fi, catering areas, conference rooms and accessible facilities for all visitors.
