An ultra dream through Val d’Orcia: Tuscany Crossing is a competitive trail and ultra-trail race organised by ASD Sienarunners, taking place in southern Tuscany in the Val d’Orcia Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is described as running an ultra marathon in the rolling hills of Tuscany, a dream where landscapes are never the same. The event is a journey through three distinct souls of Val d’Orcia, the wine region near Montalcino, the classic area passing through San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza, and the mountainous section reaching highest elevations.

Four distances plus walks: The format offers Distance Run 160 km, 103 km, 53 km, 15 km and Distance Walk 103 km, 53 km, 15 km. The 100-mile race, TC100M, covers 161 km with 5220 meters positive elevation, 16 percent asphalt of which 9 percent crossing villages and towns, with 6 ITRA points. The TC103K covers 103 km with significant elevation, the TC50K covers 53 km, and TC15K covers 15 km. All routes mostly pass through typical Tuscan countryside comprising mainly dirt tracks, footpaths and tarmac less than 20 percent, passing through some of Tuscany’s most beautiful villages.

A real restyling of the track: After experience of first two editions of 100 miles, precautions were necessary and real restyling was made, dividing Val d’Orcia into three parts. The Val d’Orcia of Wine goes up to Montalcino to return to life base in Castiglione d’Orcia. The Classic Val d’Orcia travels through territories of San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza which with 53 km returns to Castiglione d’Orcia. The Mountain Val d’Orcia rises to 1100 meters above sea level. Semi-autonomy and true trail spirit: The main recommendation is to calibrate forces well, pay attention to distances and manage water and food autonomy well. Val d’Orcia is land of wind and desert and can easily deceive, race is in semi-autonomy. From one refreshment point to another there can be several km and long time, so mandatory material is essential. Knowledge of route offers physical and mental advantages, especially sections you expect to run in dark when mental and physical energy may be low.

Route signposted using arrows, marker tape, directional signs, reflective markers explained during briefing, with reflective elements at night. Official GPS track made available on website, official signposting takes precedence over GPS track, but vandalism or weather may alter signposting so road book, maps and GPS track should be studied. Familiarity with route offers advantages, especially dark sections. Head torch compulsory at night with second light source recommended.
