The Ferrara Marathon is one of Italy’s most atmospheric historic marathons, a race that allows you to take two birds with one stone by combining sport, culture, history and vacation in a single weekend. Held in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, a city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being the ideal Renaissance city, this event is designed as both a high-quality road race and a route through heritage.
Expect a completely flat and rapid route with very few curves, creating ideal conditions for a new personal best. The course is 100 percent on pavement, asphalt road, closed roads, single loop, valley profile, AIMS-ready and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site, scenic, castle, historic, park and beginner friendly. It is organized by Corri Ferrara ASD in collaboration with the provincial committee FIDAL of Ferrara, an association with a long history dating back to 1979 when it was first run as the Vigarano Marathon, while the modern Ferrara Marathon and Half Marathon format dates from 2011.
What makes Ferrara unique is its start and finish at the stunning Castello Estense, the massive 14th-century water castle with moat in the heart of the city, once residence of the d’Este family. In Ferrara you are known for bicycles, but during marathon weekend the city huddles around athletes, supporting them and experiencing the emotions of the challenge with them. You will run alongside ancient city walls, the iconic Palazzo dei Diamanti, through the beautiful Giorgio Bassani Urban Park with its scenic lakes, the charming historic streets, the Darsena area and the elegant Piazza Ariostea. The finish brings you right back next to Castello Estense where the journey began, in a perfect loop through history and beauty.
The event size ranges from 5,000 to 9,999 participants across all distances, creating an intimate yet international atmosphere that is eco-friendly, family friendly and deeply local. Services are extensive and included, making it ideal for first-time marathoners and seasoned runners alike.
