Bologna Festival 2026 is the 45th edition of one of Bologna’s established classical-music institutions, with a programme designed around orchestral concerts, chamber music, early music, contemporary works, educational projects and performances for families. The festival has a history dating back to 1982 and has presented nearly 1,300 concerts over its history.

Bologna Festival unfolds throughout the year. Rather than taking place at one single festival ground, the programme connects theatres, museums, churches, university spaces, historic courtyards and other cultural locations across Bologna. The 2026 programme includes Grandi Interpreti, Il Nuovo l’Antico l’Altrove, Classica in Sneakers, Palazzo Pepoli in Musica, Baby BoFe’, Pianofortissimo & Talenti, Carteggi Musicali and Special Projects.

The season covers music from the Baroque and earlier repertoire through Romantic and twentieth-century works to modern and contemporary compositions. The programme also includes talks, educational activities, musical theatre for children and community initiatives.

Periodo del festival: Throughout 2026

Bologna Festival unfolds throughout the year rather than operating as a single continuous festival weekend. The official programme is divided into multiple concert series and special projects, allowing performances to take place across different periods and venues throughout Bologna.

Because the user experience depends on the individual series and concert selected, visitors should consult the official calendar for the specific performance they want to attend.

Sede principale: Auditorium Teatro Manzoni

Indirizzo: Via de’ Monari 1/2, Bologna, Italy

Bologna Festival does not have one permanent festival site. Auditorium Teatro Manzoni is one of its principal concert venues, while the wider programme moves through a large network of cultural locations. The Manzoni began as a cinema and was transformed into an auditorium after major renovation, with the venue now recognised for its acoustics.

Other festival locations include:

This multi-venue format is one of the defining characteristics of Bologna Festival, placing classical music within Bologna’s historic and cultural landscape.

The complete 2026 programme contains a large number of artists, orchestras, ensembles and projects rather than a single festival lineup.

Grandi Interpreti: The major international programme includes the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia conducted by Daniel Harding with soprano Christiane Karg, the Utopia Orchestra conducted by Teodor Currentzis with violinist Vilde Frang, the Münchener Kammerorchester with pianist Piotr Anderszewski, and the Orchestra Leonore with pianist Alexander Malofeev.

Chamber and contemporary programmes: The wider season includes ensembles and performers such as FontanaMIX Ensemble, Ensemble Brezza, Opus13 Quartet, Quartetto K, Accademia Strumentale Italiana and pianist Emanuele Arciuli.

Family and educational programmes: Baby BoFe’ brings productions created specifically for children and families, extending the festival’s programme beyond conventional concert audiences.

The 2026 Grandi Interpreti programme places several internationally recognised musicians and ensembles at the centre of the season.

Sir Simon Rattle and Chamber Orchestra of Europe: Their programme combines works by Bartók, Busoni and Brahms and represents one of the season’s major orchestral appearances.

Daniel Harding and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia: The programme brings together Wagner and Mahler, with soprano Christiane Karg joining the orchestra.

Teodor Currentzis, Utopia Orchestra and Vilde Frang: Their programme features works by Alban Berg and Gustav Mahler and forms another prominent part of the Grandi Interpreti series.

Piotr Anderszewski and Münchener Kammerorchester: The collaboration forms part of the festival’s international orchestral and chamber programme.

Bologna Festival operates through individual concert venues rather than conventional festival stages.

Auditorium Teatro Manzoni: The principal setting for major Grandi Interpreti performances, offering a formal concert-hall environment and strong acoustics.

Historic churches and oratories: Venues such as the Oratorio San Filippo Neri, Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi and Basilica dei Santi Bartolomeo e Gaetano provide settings for early music, chamber performances and special projects.

Museum and cultural spaces: Palazzo Pepoli and the Museo della Musica allow concerts to take place alongside Bologna’s artistic and musical heritage.

Outdoor and historic courtyards: The festival’s summer programming has included the Cortile dell’Archiginnasio and the Chiostro della Basilica di Santo Stefano, creating a different atmosphere from the major indoor concert venues.

There is no single stage-by-stage schedule because Bologna Festival is distributed across multiple series and venues.

Grandi Interpreti: International orchestras, conductors and soloists form the core major-concert programme.

Il Nuovo l’Antico l’Altrove: This series connects early music, contemporary repertoire, rediscoveries and new artistic approaches. The programme includes ensembles such as FontanaMIX, Ensemble Brezza, Opus13 Quartet, Quartetto K and Accademia Strumentale Italiana.

Classica in Sneakers: Classical music is presented in a more informal environment, including performances at the Birreria Popolare.

Palazzo Pepoli in Musica: Concerts connect music with the collections and historic surroundings of the Museo della Storia di Bologna.

Baby BoFe’: Family-oriented productions introduce younger audiences to music, opera, ballet and musical theatre.

Set times vary by individual concert and venue rather than following a festival-wide timetable.

The official programme includes evening concerts as well as daytime performances, family productions and educational activities. Individual event pages provide the performance time and duration for each programme.

Visitors should check the individual concert listing before travelling because opening times, performance duration and venue access can differ from one programme to another.

Bologna Festival offers individual concert tickets as well as subscriptions and multi-concert packages. Tickets are sold online through the festival’s ticketing system and partner platforms including Vivaticket and Classictic.

Previous and current published 2026 prices demonstrate a broad range depending on the concert, venue and seating sector.

Major concert reference pricing: For a Grandi Interpreti performance, published prices range from approximately $22 to $139, depending on seating section and programme. One published concert lists Section A at approximately $104, Section B at $81, Section C at $57 and Section D at $22, with a youth ticket from approximately $23.

Chamber and contemporary concerts: Published single prices for some Il Nuovo l’Antico l’Altrove performances are approximately $26, with youth tickets around $12.

Family performances: Published Baby BoFe’ prices include approximately $18 for adults and $14 for children, with reduced rates available for eligible groups.

Prices exclude applicable online booking commissions.

Bologna Festival does not operate a conventional VIP festival package system. Its premium-style options are primarily based around subscriptions, preferred seating sectors and multi-concert access.

ORO Subscription: The 2026 ORO subscription covers 20 events, with published prices approximately equivalent to $537 for Sector A, $455 for Sector B and $362 for Sector C. Youth and National Youth Card rates are also available.

Grandi Interpreti Subscription: The seven-concert package is approximately $420 for Sector A, $315 for Sector B and $210 for Sector C, with separate youth rates.

Three-concert package: A three-concert package for selected Grandi Interpreti performances offers a 15% discount compared with the corresponding full ticket prices.

These options are more accurately viewed as subscription and premium seating opportunities rather than VIP festival access.

Visitors should follow the rules established by Bologna Festival and the individual venue.

Seat allocation: Assigned seats are guaranteed until five minutes before the performance begins.

Late entry: Entry is not permitted once a concert has begun.

Fotografia e registrazione: Photography and audio/video recording are strictly prohibited during performances.

Cambiamenti nel programma: Festival management may make programme changes when necessary because of technical requirements or force majeure.

Ticket conditions: Visitors should retain their ticket or subscription documentation and follow the entry requirements of the specific venue.

In treno: Bologna Centrale is the city’s main railway station and provides high-speed and regional connections across Italy. From the station, visitors can continue to individual festival venues by local bus, taxi or on foot depending on the location.

From the city centre: Many Bologna Festival locations are within or close to the historic centre, making walking a practical option for several performances.

In auto: Visitors driving to Bologna should check parking availability near the specific concert venue because the festival operates across different parts of the city.

Per via aerea: Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is the city’s main airport and provides connections to the urban transport network.

Because there is no single festival site, the best route depends on the individual performance venue.

Trasporti pubblici: Bologna’s bus network connects the central railway station, historic centre and outer districts. Visitors should use the exact venue address when planning their journey.

Camminare: Several festival venues are situated within Bologna’s historic centre and can be reached conveniently on foot from central accommodation.

Parcheggio: Parking options vary according to the venue. Bologna Festival subscribers have previously received discounts at participating parking facilities, including Garage Bologna and Garage Marconi.

Visitors travelling by car should check local access restrictions and parking conditions before attending a performance.

Bologna Historic Centre: Staying in the centre provides convenient access to many churches, museums, theatres and cultural venues used by Bologna Festival.

Quartiere Universitario: This area offers accommodation close to several central cultural and educational locations and is well suited to visitors attending chamber or contemporary programmes.

Bologna Centrale: Staying near the railway station is useful for visitors arriving by train and provides straightforward connections to different festival venues.

Santo Stefano: This area is particularly convenient for programmes using historic courtyards and cultural spaces around the Basilica of Santo Stefano.

Since Bologna Festival uses many venues, visitors should select accommodation according to the specific concerts they plan to attend.

Bologna is renowned for its food culture, and the festival’s city-wide format allows visitors to combine concerts with Bologna’s restaurants, cafés, markets and traditional food venues.

Some programmes also take place in informal settings. Classica in Sneakers, for example, uses the Birreria Popolare as one of its locations, creating a more relaxed environment for classical music.

Visitors attending evening concerts can find restaurants and cafés throughout the historic centre, while those attending daytime performances can combine the event with Bologna’s museums and cultural attractions.

Accessibility can vary because Bologna Festival uses many different venues, including historic churches, museums, theatres, courtyards and other cultural spaces.

Visitors with mobility requirements should check the accessibility arrangements of the specific venue before purchasing or travelling. The festival’s ticketing and information services can provide venue-specific guidance.

Families and younger audiences are also specifically included within the programme through Baby BoFe’, which is designed for children and families.

For accessibility or ticket assistance, visitors can contact Bologna Festival directly at +39 051 649 3397 or info@bolognafestival.it.

Because Bologna Festival unfolds throughout the year and consists of several separate programmes, there is no single best festival day.

For major orchestral performances: Choose a Grandi Interpreti concert featuring an orchestra, conductor or soloist of particular interest.

For chamber music: The Talenti and Il Nuovo l’Antico l’Altrove programmes provide a more intimate concert experience.

For historic settings: Consider performances staged in Bologna’s churches, cloisters, museums and historic courtyards.

Per le famiglie: Baby BoFe’ is specifically designed around children and family audiences.

The best choice therefore depends on whether the priority is orchestral music, chamber repertoire, early music, contemporary works, historic venues or family programming.

The previous edition continued Bologna Festival’s tradition of bringing major international orchestras, conductors and soloists to Bologna.

Berliner Philharmoniker and Riccardo Muti: The 2025 Grandi Interpreti programme featured the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Riccardo Muti.

London Symphony Orchestra and Antonio Pappano: The London Symphony Orchestra appeared with conductor Antonio Pappano and violinist Lisa Batiashvili.

RAI National Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Petrenko: The season also featured the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI under Kirill Petrenko.

Europa Galante and Fabio Biondi: The historic-performance ensemble presented Baroque repertoire at Teatro Auditorium Manzoni.

Young performers: The Pianofortissimo & Talenti programme continued its focus on emerging musicians, including pianists and chamber ensembles.

Official Bologna Festival tickets are available through the festival’s ticketing section, with online purchasing provided through Vivaticket and other authorised platforms. Individual tickets, subscriptions and concert packages are available depending on the programme.

Visitare questo evento?
