The Bellini International Context Festival 2026 is the sixth edition of the cultural event dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini, the celebrated composer born in Catania. The 2026 edition runs from 15 September to 4 October and brings together music, theatre and cultural encounters across Catania, Messina, Palermo and Agrigento.

The festival is designed around Bellini’s music and legacy while placing his work in conversation with other composers, performers, musical traditions and contemporary artistic forms. The program includes opera, orchestral concerts, chamber music, jazz, sacred music, theatre, dance, conferences and educational activities.

Rather than operating from one large festival ground, Bellini International Context uses theatres, historic buildings, churches, museums, public spaces and outdoor locations. Catania is the principal centre, with important events also taking place in Messina, Palermo and Agrigento.

The 2026 program includes major Bellini works and projects connected with his operatic heritage. Among the principal productions are I Puritani, Bianca e Gernando-related events, performances dedicated to Bellini’s relationship with Rossini and Donizetti, and programs exploring Bellini through jazz and other contemporary interpretations.

Visitors can therefore experience the festival as both a music event and a cultural journey through Sicily. The combination of performances and historic venues makes it possible to attend concerts while discovering Catania and other Sicilian cities.

The sixth edition of Bellini International Context takes place from Tuesday, 15 September to Sunday, 4 October 2026.

The official festival program lists events throughout the period, with Catania hosting the largest number of activities. Messina, Palermo and Agrigento are also included in the 2026 edition.

Important dates include:

The official calendar should be checked before travel because the festival includes multiple simultaneous venues and individual event schedules.

Bellini International Context does not have one permanent festival site. Instead, the 2026 edition uses a network of theatres, cultural institutions, churches and outdoor spaces.

Important Catania venues include:

Teatro Metropolitan is particularly important in 2026 because it hosts I Puritani, Bellini’s opera seria in three acts with a libretto by Carlo Pepoli. The theatre is located at Via Sant’Euplio 21 in Catania.

The festival also extends beyond Catania. Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Messina, Teatro Politeama Garibaldi in Palermo and Teatro Luigi Pirandello in Agrigento are among the venues included in the wider program.

The 2026 lineup is structured as a program of individual concerts, operas, theatrical productions, cultural meetings and special projects rather than a conventional artist festival lineup.

Confirmed program titles include:

The official calendar identifies the individual performers, orchestras, directors and ensembles attached to each event.

The Bellini International Context does not use a traditional headliner system. The principal artistic figures are opera singers, conductors, orchestras, choirs, ensembles and directors associated with individual productions.

For I Puritani, the 2026 cast includes Jessica Pratt and Irina Lungu as Elvira; Dmitry Korchak and Valerio Borgioni as Lord Arturo Talbo; Christian Federici and Janusz Nosek as Sir Riccardo Forth; Carlo Lepore and Dario Russo as Sir Giorgio; and Anna Pennisi and Sofia Janelidze as Enrichetta di Francia.

The production features the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro Massimo Bellini, with Fabrizio Maria Carminati conducting and Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina serving as chorus master. Renato Bonajuto is the director, with Arcangelo Mazza responsible for sets and video and Giovanna Adelaide Giorgianni for costumes.

The wider program also features the Orchestra Fiati Regionale Siciliana Fe.Ba.Si., with Alfio Zito and Salvatore Tralongo conducting for the Omaggio a Vincenzo Bellini program.

There are no numbered festival stages. Instead, the event’s performance areas are individual theatres, historic venues, churches, outdoor spaces and cultural institutions.

Villa Bellini provides an outdoor setting for several events. Cortile Platamone hosts evening performances, while Teatro Sangiorgi is used for theatrical and musical productions.

Teatro Metropolitan is the principal opera venue for I Puritani. Other events take place at the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini, Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata and Chiesa di Santa Teresa.

In Messina, Teatro Vittorio Emanuele forms an important part of the program. The festival also reaches Palermo and Agrigento with selected performances.

This venue-based structure means that visitors should treat every performance as an individual event and check its specific location before travelling.

Because there are no conventional festival stages, the 2026 schedule can be organised by the principal cities and venues.

Catania – Villa Bellini

Villa Bellini hosts several outdoor events, including La disfida di Parigi and Da Napoli a Parigi. The venue also hosts Omaggio a Vincenzo Bellini during the festival.

Catania – Teatro Sangiorgi

Teatro Sangiorgi hosts performances including Bellini alla Norma, Un Bellini, s’il vous plaît! and other music and theatre-related events.

Catania – Cortile Platamone

Cortile Platamone is used for evening performances including Convenienze e inconvenienze… matrimoniali, Omaggio a Vincenzo Bellini and La follia romantica e le parafrasi.

Catania – Teatro Metropolitan

Teatro Metropolitan hosts the 2026 performances of I Puritani. The opera has performances scheduled between 23 September and 1 October.

Messina – Teatro Vittorio Emanuele

Messina contributes orchestral and other musical events to the festival program, including the 17 September Concerto sinfonico.

Palermo and Agrigento

The 2026 edition also extends to Palermo and Agrigento, making the festival a wider Sicilian cultural program rather than an event confined to Catania.

Start times vary significantly according to the event and venue.

Many evening performances begin at 21:00. Other events begin at 19:00, while some educational, religious and daytime activities are scheduled in the morning.

I Puritani has two principal evening performances at 20:30 and several afternoon performances at 17:30. The official schedule lists:

These times are published by the official festival for the 2026 production.

Admission arrangements vary between events. The official festival calendar includes numerous events that are available through reservation, while I Puritani has published ticket prices.

For I Puritani, the official prices are listed in euros as €35 for Platea and €15 for Tribuna on the A, B, C, D and S2 performances, and €20 for Platea and €10 for Tribuna on the S1 and R performances.

Using an exchange rate of approximately $1.1482 per €1, these prices are approximately:

The official festival website should be checked for the latest ticket availability and any exchange-rate changes before publication or purchase.

The published 2026 festival information does not list a separate festival-wide VIP pass, VIP lounge or premium hospitality package.

For I Puritani, admission is organised through theatre seating categories, principally Platea and Tribuna. The festival therefore operates differently from a large commercial music festival with VIP zones and hospitality compounds.

Visitors looking for better seating should check the available seating categories through the authorised ticketing channel rather than expecting a separate VIP festival package.

Because Bellini International Context uses different theatres, churches, museums and public spaces, rules can vary according to the venue.

Visitors should arrive before the published start time and follow the instructions of venue staff. Theatre performances may have specific late-entry procedures, while outdoor and public-space events may have different access arrangements.

For reserved events, visitors should keep their reservation confirmation available. For ticketed performances, tickets should be purchased through the official channels identified by the festival.

Visitors should also check individual venue policies concerning photography, recording, bags, food and drink and accessibility before attending.

Catania is the main base for Bellini International Context and is served by Catania-Fontanarossa Airport.

International visitors can reach Catania by direct or connecting flights from various European cities. Catania is also connected with mainland Italy through rail, road and ferry services.

For visitors attending several events, staying in central Catania can make it easier to reach the city’s theatres and cultural venues. Events in Messina, Palermo and Agrigento require separate travel planning because they are located outside Catania.

Visitors travelling by car should check the location of each venue carefully because historic central areas may have traffic restrictions.

Catania’s central venues can generally be reached using local public transport or on foot from central accommodation areas.

For venues around the historic centre, walking can be practical between nearby performances and restaurants. Visitors travelling to venues farther from their accommodation should allow additional time for public transport.

Parking arrangements depend on the individual venue. Drivers should check local restrictions and available car parks before an evening performance, particularly around the historic centre.

For visitors travelling between Catania and Messina, Palermo or Agrigento, regional rail and bus services can be considered, but evening return times should be checked carefully when attending late performances.

Catania is the most convenient base for visitors planning to attend several 2026 festival events.

Les domaines utiles incluent :

Visitors whose plans focus on Palermo, Agrigento or Messina may instead choose accommodation in those cities to avoid late-night travel after performances.

Bellini International Context does not operate a dedicated festival food village. Instead, visitors can use the restaurants, cafés, bakeries, markets and bars surrounding the festival venues.

Catania offers a broad selection of Sicilian food, including pasta alla Norma, arancini, granita, brioche, cannoli, seafood and traditional pastries.

Visitors attending evening performances should allow enough time for dinner before the show. Many festival events begin at 21:00, while some performances begin at 19:00.

The historic centre is particularly useful for combining cultural events with local dining because several festival venues are located close to restaurants and cafés.

Accessibility depends on the individual venue because the festival takes place in theatres, historic buildings, churches, museums and outdoor spaces.

Visitors who require wheelchair access, accessible seating or assistance should contact the relevant venue before attending. Historic buildings can have different entrances, seating arrangements and accessibility facilities.

For ticketed productions, accessibility requirements should ideally be communicated when purchasing tickets or before the performance date.

Visitors should also verify accessible routes directly with the venue because accessibility information can differ between individual festival locations.

The ideal dates depend on the type of program a visitor wants to experience.

For visitors primarily interested in opera, the I Puritani performances from 23 September through 1 October are the key dates. The production has seven scheduled performances at Teatro Metropolitan.

For visitors interested in the wider festival program, the opening period from 15 to 22 September includes a broad selection of concerts, theatre, outdoor performances and cultural events in Catania and Messina.

26 September is also significant because the program includes activities connected with Bianca e Gernando. A study meeting titled Intorno a “Bianca e Gernando” is scheduled at the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini on 26 September from 09:30 to 13:00.

Visitors interested in sacred music can also consider the closing period, which includes Un tal baccano in chiesa! Il sacro nel belcanto and other late-festival activities.

The previous edition was the fifth Bellini International Context, held in 2025. Its program ran from 13 to 28 September and included concerts, opera, theatre, dance, jazz, educational activities and cultural meetings.

One of the major productions of the 2025 edition was Il Pirata, another important Bellini opera. The program also included Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti: i Titani del primo Ottocento, CircusOperaShow, Bellini in Jazz & Classic in Swing, Bellindanza and Bellini-Paganini, un dialogo (im)possibile.

The 2025 program also featured a performance of Bellini – Composizioni da camera in jazz by Corelli Jazz Combo in Messina and various events exploring Bellini through different musical formats.

The 2026 edition continues this multidisciplinary approach while expanding the published festival geography to Catania, Messina, Palermo and Agrigento.

Ticket arrangements depend on the individual performance.

For I Puritani, the official festival identifies the Teatro Massimo Bellini box office in Piazza Teatro Massimo and VivaTicket as ticketing channels. The Teatro Metropolitan box office is located at Via Sant’Euplio 21 in Catania.

The Teatro Massimo Bellini box office hours published for the production are Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00, with the listed telephone number +39 095 316150.

Many other events in the festival program are presented through reservation or free admission arrangements. Visitors should use the individual event page on the official festival website for the current admission instructions.

Temps de set
