Stramilano is one of Italy’s most beloved and historic mass running events, a true sporting phenomenon of the people that brings together tens of thousands of participants in a friendly atmosphere for exercise and fresh air. Born from an idea by Renato Cepparo, the event was first organized as a night-time fun walk that ran along the entire outer ring road of Milan. The first edition set off from the oratory on Viale Suzzani with a small group of friends from the Fior di Roccia climbing group, devoted to climbing and sport, and unexpectedly attracted thousands of additional runners who tagged along. That genuine, unadulterated pleasure of a friendly gang of Milanese enthusiasts kick-started the era of non-competitive events with the first Italian fun run.
Over time the event has grown to reach its fifty third edition and continues to attract around fifty thousand participants of all ages and levels each year, including children with the Stramilanina. The city has taken the event to its heart. The route winds through the streets of downtown Milan, starting from Piazza del Duomo, towered over by its world-famous cathedral, and ending symbolically at the Arena Civica or the Arco della Pace. The start in Piazza Duomo is legendary, with the thunder of the horse artillery regiment’s cannon and the ever-present fanfare of the bersaglieri infantry who always run, making them the perfect fit for the Stramilano. It does not matter whether participants run, walk or plod, there is a warm community spirit as they count down the kilometers to the Arena Civica.
Today the programme comprises three distinct parts that run in parallel. The Stramilano International Half Marathon is a professional road running competition over twenty one point zero nine seven five kilometers, recognized with a World Athletics Road Race Label and FIDAL Gold Label. The Stramilano dei 50.000 is a ten kilometer non-competitive run and walk open to the general public, famous for being the Stramilano of the fifty thousand. The Stramilanina is a five kilometer event for younger people and families who want to take it easy. The event is flat, fast, and entirely on paved roads, making it ideal for personal bests, first-time half marathoners, and large groups who want to share the city streets without traffic.
