What to expect

More than a race, a sensory journey through Brunello land: Brunello Crossing is an event created by a group of sports enthusiasts and lovers of the Montalcino area who wanted to develop an idea that goes far beyond a competitive race. It is a trail running festival that blends running, nature, food and wine, and art in one of the most iconic territories of Tuscany. You will run through UNESCO World Heritage landscapes of Val d’Orcia, through woods which cover about fifty percent of the area, through vineyards of Brunello di Montalcino, medieval villages, farms, castles and white roads.

Four distances for all levels: The event confirms its traditional full house format. For competitive runners there are three distances. The Banfi Trophy covers 45 km with 1820 meters of positive elevation gain, the queen race that has challenged the most famous national and international trail runners. The Camigliano Trophy covers 24 km with 1100 meters of elevation gain, a perfect mix of technical challenge and fast rolling sections. The Enoteca La Fortezza Trophy covers 14 km with 650 meters of elevation gain, ideal for those approaching trail running or looking for a shorter but still authentic experience. For walkers there is the Walk Nordic and Walking non-competitive format covering 17.5 km with 750 meters of elevation gain, organized with approval of UISP and dedicated to Nordic walking and hiking.

A course that tells history: The three competitive races start from central Piazza del Popolo in Montalcino, crossing the historic center and exiting through Porta al Cassero, one of six gates adjacent to the fourteenth century Fortress built in the highest part of medieval town. From there you traverse woods and Brunello vineyards toward Castello Banfi Poggio alle Mura, whose first nucleus was built before year 1000, imposing on a strategic hill controlling confluence of Orcia and Ombrone rivers. The route leaves Val d’Orcia to ascend toward medieval village of Sant Angelo in Colle, descends toward Ventolaio where 45 km path rejoins 24 km, then steep descent called Il Patataio with breathtaking view of Val d’Orcia and backdrop of Monte Amiata to Castelnuovo dell Abate and the Abbey of Sant Antimo, a Romanesque church where Charlemagne returning from Rome through Via Francigena initiated monastery construction. Leaving monastery, with continuous alternation of woods and vineyards, route ascends toward Il Cocco, one of highest points where 14 km also joins before entering Montalcino through Porta Cerbaia to main street until finish in Piazza del Popolo.

Green and authentic philosophy: The organization works with local institutions and partners such as Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, Comune di Montalcino, Regione Toscana and Parco della Val d’Orcia. The 7th edition introduced a completely green choice where every participant can choose between receiving a technical T-shirt or planting trees. The race pack contains a bottle of wine and technical and local food products plus voucher for pasta party. Finisher prize for all is wine goblet with respective strap, and for athletes who participated in six previous editions a Vinocchio Decanter is given, elegant container reminiscent of bottle that allows young wines to oxygenate and aged ones to separate sediments.
